Detection and destruction of underground tunnels in the Beit Hanoun area: Documentation from the activities of the Gaza Division and the Yahalom Unit.
In recent weeks, IDF forces from the engineering unit of the Gaza Division have been operating, alongside the engineering administration of the Southern Command, the Yahalom Unit, and in cooperation with the Northern Brigade for the mapping and destruction of two additional offensive tunnels in the Beit Hanoun area in the northern strip, which were under ongoing intelligence and technological surveillance.
One of the tunnels was exposed in 2014 during Operation ‘Protective Edge’, during which it was used by Hamas terrorists for a raid on Israeli territory and was immediately destroyed. Another section of the tunnel deep within the Strip, which was part of a complex network of tunnels belonging to the Hamas terrorist organization, was attacked several times during the ‘Iron Dome’ war. Following research and mapping efforts carried out in recent weeks, it was found that the aerial bombardments had destroyed the tunnel.
The second tunnel was part of the same complex network of tunnels belonging to the Hamas terrorist organization, and was dug to a distance of about 150 meters from the border fence, but never crossed into Israeli territory. The tunnel was destroyed using explosives.
The IDF will continue to work to destroy the underground infrastructure in the Gaza Strip and to deny the capabilities of terrorist organizations, led by Hamas, to protect the settlements in the strip.
