Shimon Alroy Ben Shitrit

Shimon Alroy Ben Shitrit was born on April 21, 2003, in Beit She’an, Israel, as the fourth child of Iris and Raphael Ben Shitrit. Growing up in a loving household with his siblings Oria, Yahel, Naora, and Leah, Alroy was cherished by his family and known for his curiosity and adventurous spirit. He shared a particularly close bond with his sister Yahel, who worked as a nurse. She often described him as having a “heart of gold,” always caring for others with warmth and kindness.

Inspired by tales of heroism from his family and community, Alroy joined the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) after graduating high school. On March 29, 2022, he enlisted in the IDF’s Combat Intelligence Collection Corps as a balloon surveillance operator, a role that demanded vigilance and bravery. Alroy quickly earned the respect of his peers and superiors, recognized for his leadership skills and calm demeanor under pressure.

The Ben Shitrit family was immensely proud of Alroy’s service. His father, Raphael, a former mayor of Beit She’an, frequently spoke of Alroy’s dedication and bravery. However, on October 7, 2023, tragedy struck during a battle at Nahal Oz, where Alroy’s unit faced a fierce assault by Hamas militants. Alroy fought bravely but tragically lost his life, leaving his family and community devastated.

The news of Alroy’s passing was a tremendous blow to Beit She’an. Thousands of residents gathered to mourn the loss of a young man who had become a symbol of hope and courage. His cousin, Liraz Sharvit, captured the community’s grief by describing Alroy as an “angel” whose smile lit up lives and whose kind heart touched many.

In response to this tragedy, Alroy’s father Raphael became an advocate for justice, joining a Civil Investigation Committee to uncover the truth behind the events of October 7th. He called for accountability, demanding a state investigation to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.

To honor Alroy’s memory, the Ben Shitrit family shared stories of his kindness and bravery, ensuring his legacy would live on. They even shared his favorite dish, beet kibbeh, as a reminder of the joyful moments they cherished together.

Alroy was posthumously promoted to First Sergeant, a recognition of his courage and dedication. As he was laid to rest in the military section of Beit She’an Cemetery, the community bid farewell to a young hero who had given everything for his country.

Though Alroy’s life was tragically short, his legacy continues to inspire those who knew him. His story serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and sacrifice of IDF soldiers and the enduring spirit of those who dedicate their lives to protecting their nation. The Ben Shitrit family remains determined to honor Alroy’s memory, ensuring his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.
