Aviad served 280 days of reserve duty during the war: two rotations in the north, one in Gaza, and another in Lebanon. Before his last deployment, he confided in his wife, Shir, expressing a feeling that he might not return this time. With a touch of humor, he told her that if anything happened to him, she mustn’t sell his ATV.
While operating in South Lebanon as part of the Carmeli Brigade, Aviad’s unit was tasked with clearing the mountain area of Jabal Balat, which overlooks the western Galilee, nearly reaching the city of Haifa. During the mission, they uncovered a large weapons cache prepared by Hezbollah, intended for a swift takeover of northern Israeli towns near the border. To secure the area and prevent attacks, part of the force advanced ahead. They discovered a shaft leading to a tunnel, but an explosive device was detonated, claiming the lives of Aviad and three other soldiers from his unit.
At his funeral, Aviad’s brother, Amihai, shared heartfelt words:
“He was always the first to jump in and volunteer for any mission, and he approached everything with joy. There wasn’t a single person who turned to Aviad and didn’t receive his help. He had a pure heart and a special soul. In his short life, he managed to spread so much light in the world.”
