Yonatan Elazari, 19, from Alon Shvut, joined the Duvdevan military unit two months before he visited friends in Ofakim during the Simchat Torah holiday weekend on October 7.
When the sirens began, Yonatan and a friend climbed to the roof of a building and saw numerous terrorists shooting around them. He took a weapon from a wounded soldier and helped evacuate civilians who had been shot. Realizing the extent of the attack, he joined two armed civilians and bravely fought the terrorists in the city’s streets. Upon noticing a group of terrorists sheltering in a yard, he climbed to a nearby roof to engage them and died in the ensuing gunfight.
