Humanitarian Aid Efforts in Gaza – Updates (May 1-2, 2023)

Opening of the Northern Crossing

For the first time since Hamas attacked on October 7, the northern (Erez) crossing opened for the entry of aid. This is part of our efforts to increase the quantity and routes of aid into Gaza. On May 1, 406 aid trucks were inspected and transferred to the Gaza Strip.

Aid Distribution Stats

Within Gaza, 196 trucks were distributed, with 121 of those containing food. Additionally, airdrops were conducted, with 173 pallets containing tens of thousands of packages of food aid airdropped in coordination with partner countries over northern Gaza on May 1.

Coordinated Aid to Northern Gaza

During the same period, 88 aid trucks were coordinated to northern Gaza, which included:

  • 56 trucks from the private sector
  • 2 from WHO
  • 30 through the new northern crossing

Supply of Cooking Gas and Fuel

Four tankers of cooking gas and two tankers of fuel designated for the operation of essential infrastructure in Gaza also entered on May 1. Furthermore, 28 trucks of flour were coordinated via the Ashdod port program.

Jordanian Aid Route

On the Jordanian Route, 76 aid trucks were coordinated on May 1.

Coordination Requests

Out of 40 general coordination requests, 35 (88%) were approved as of May 1. Additionally, 7 UN requests for coordinations were submitted, with 2 being approved. There were also 13 coordinations to northern Gaza requested, with 10 approved. Since January 1, 2024, 87% of all coordination requests have been approved.

Bakeries Operating in Gaza

Currently, 26 bakeries are operational in Gaza, providing close to 5 million breads, rolls, and pita breads daily.

Evacuations and Water Supply

So far, 3,204 injured and sick individuals and 725 escorts have been evacuated from the strip. The northern water pipeline from Israel is now fully operational, providing an average of 50 liters of water per person per day.

Humanitarian Pause for Aid Movement

Today, May 2, between 10:00 and 14:00, the IDF will pause operations in the Tel Al-Saltan neighborhood of Rafah to enable the movement of humanitarian aid.
